In this edition of Beyond the Singlet we are joined by Track Friday champion Kate Reilly. Kate joined Richmond Harriers last year, following her move from Brisbane. Despite being a self-proclaimed “non-runner” Kate has been knocking off PBs for fun this winter, with impressive performances in the Run Melbourne 10k and her first ever half marathon at Gold Coast. Welcome Kate!

Kate after completing her first half marathon at Gold Coast this year

How did you get into running?

Originally through triathlon! I started in a team triathlon around 5 years ago as the swimmer but once we got to the event we all got super excited and convinced each other we could do the whole event.

From there I started training all three sports, however running was consistently my worst leg. I’ve been running since then and joined a run club as way to improve my time. I didn’t quite realise just how much or far I’d be running a year on!

How did you come to join Richmond Harriers?

A google search of local running clubs! There was a page that listed Melbourne’s top 10 running clubs which included Richmond Harriers, and given I knew I was moving to Richmond it was an easy choice.

I looked up clubs before moving to Melbourne as I knew I wanted to join a club when I moved down and have been running with the Harriers since my first Wednesday after the move.

Besides running, what are your other hobbies?

Besides from running you can find me swimming and bike riding, although they have both currently fallen far behind my running training.

Outside of that I love a wine, trying restaurants and wine bars around Melbourne, architecture & galleries, gigs, hiking and travel.

What’s your favourite running memory?

Not a direct answer, however in the year and a half that I’ve been with the Harriers there is a culmination of lots of little moments, jokes, quotes and achievements that all add up to something special overall.

That being said, my first half marathon at the Gold Coast is pretty hard to beat (despite the adversity!). We had a great crew up there supporting each other, it was my first time attempting such a long distance and we all got some very good laughs in.

What running shoes are you currently wearing?

ASICS Gel Kayanos (very exciting) and ASICS Super Blasts for when I’m feeling speedy.

Do you have a running idol / mentor that inspires you?

The looming figure – Tommy Chapman.

What does your weekly training schedule currently look like?

Currently I’m running the social Wednesdays, track Friday, a weekend slow run and once a week with work. Around that I usually try to fit in a ride, a swim and a pilates session for some strength training.

After your recent exploits at Gold Coast and Run Melbourne, do you have any other events coming up?

Back to my roots – my next event is Noosa triathlon in November. I’m hoping to do a decent time on the run for once but will need to do some brick training off the bike to make sure my legs are up for the challenge.

What running event is top of your bucket list?

Not a specific event, but I’d love to push for a full marathon sometime in the near future. Seeing many of the Harriers training together this year for the Gold Coast marathon was great and I would be keen to join forces to make those very long weekend runs much more enjoyable.
